In the past, if you wanted something, you had to pay for it. Today, however, there are so many things you can get for free or that come at a heavily discounted price. But how is this possible? Is everything really free?

The answer is no.

In a world where seemingly everything is available for free, it can be hard to believe that nothing is truly free. Taking part in this new economy means understanding that if you’re not paying for a product or service, then you are the product.

Companies exist to make money and so they have to come up with creative ways of doing that.

Nothing in life is truly free.

If you’re not paying for it, you’re not the customer!

If it’s free, then most likely you are the product being sold.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Ah…, the purity of capitalism!

Let’s explore the three ways in which you are used as a commodity and how businesses manage to make money off of “free stuff” and why it’s important to understand our new economy.
