What a lovely introduction to languages and dialects! As a Swiss, we don't speak High German, we don't even speak Swiss German... we speak Baseldeutsch, Berndeutsch or Züridütsch... we can hear from where in Switzerland you are and can narrow it down to approximately 10 square miles just by hearing you talk. And it's so enriching to have all this variety and culture around... now I have a much better understanding about "classification" and ultimately, yes, we're all speaking our dialects!
